(Iced) Vietnamese Coffee - Cafe Sua (Da)
The legacy of French colonialism is most evident in Vietnam's booming cafe culture. The Vietnamese tend to like their coffee very strong and very sweet. Coffees are often prepared individually using aluminum slow-drip filters; the lengthy amount of time it takes for the water to filter through the coffee creates for an extremely dark and caffeinated cup of joe. Rather than using sugar, the Vietnamese use sweetened condensed milk to flavour their coffee. Vietnamese coffee can be ordered hot, but many prefer it over ice.
Fruit Shakes - Sinh To Trai Cay
Vietnamese fruit shakes are made rather thick and creamy using tropical fruits such as avocado, mango, soursop, durian (warning: this is an acquired taste), lychee, etc. Fruit, ice, water and condensed milk blend together to make a delicious and refreshing beverage.
Lime Soda Drink - Soda Da Chanh
Lime Soda is the Vietnamese's alternative to lemon-aide. Traditionally, lime is much more popular than lemon is, and therefore, is used in many cases where lemon would otherwise be. Lime Soda is a refreshingly tasteful drink, often served with cubed ice and sugar.
Pickled Lime Soda - Soda Da Chanh Muoi
Pickled Lime Soda gives a salty taste that comes as a result of the use of salted pickled limes. When mixed with hot water and sugar, this drink can help soothe soar throats.
Egg Yolk Soda - Soda Sua Hot Ga
As the name suggests, egg yolk soda combines raw egg yolk, club soda and sweetened condensed milk. This mixture is then poured over ice to form a sweet, creamy yet fizzy and refreshing dessert drink. While the egg ingredient may seem odd, soda sua hot ga resembles a typical North American milkshake, only bubblier. Visit our blog to read more about egg yolk soda.
